Hello,

I am not sure if this is the appropiate place to post these
suggestions, but I wasn't able to find a better email address or wiki
page. Please excuse me if this list is only reserved for code
developers, or something similar.

I have been trying Ristretto --- the XFCE image viewer --- for some
days now, and I find it a very nice program: it is reasonably small
and reasonably fast, and it has a very nice user interface. I like the
way it presents the list of images, and how you can click-scroll
through them. It is also quite compact -- so much that it makes for a
great program to display images in a presentation.

However, I have noticed a few areas where (IMHO) it could be enhanced.
Some of them are usability issues, and some are mere eyecandy:

- Scrolling the mouse wheel in the main image view displays the next
image, and that is good. But scrolling on the image list shouldn't
change the main image --- instead, it should slide the image list
itself, much as in click+dragging (ideally with smooth animation).
This would make the program more useable with the mouse.

- the "displayed" (or "selected") image in the image list shoudl
appear highlighted somehow (subtly) beyond having it placed in the
center of the list.

- It would also be nice if, when the centered image changes (because
you hit spacebar and move to a new image, for example), the image list
displaced itself smoothly to the new position, instead of just jumping
there.

- Keys + and - should be linked to zooming in and out. Likewise, 1
should display the image in real-size, and 0 should make a best-fit of
the image in the available space.

- There should also be a hotkey to show/hide the image list. This
would be especially handy when in fullscreen mode. Perhaps imagelist
should be deactivated by default when in fullscreen.

...And i think that's it! For the rest, thanks to the developers for
such a great job in this little application. It's nice and useful!

Hmm, interesting. I could add a config-option for that behaviour in
the preferences dialog.

The thumbnail-bar needs to be fine-tuned, indeed. It appears 'active'
most of the time. But it indeed needs some love.

Sorry, won't help you there (for now anyways). It will require quite a
bit of processing-power, and I'd like to improve the performance
before considering such a battery-hog ^_~.

Interesting, I see that the keyboard-shortcut editor should be pushed
a bit further forward on my TODO list.

Try <Ctrl>-t, this toggles the thumbnail-bar.

Mind you, I like the way it works now! It is a very nice feature of
the viewer. Just adding that "selected image" highlight and the
mouse-wheel-scroll would make it perfect for me (because the "smooth
scrolling when switching to next image" is just eyecandy).

Actually, I was surprised as to how smooth the click-and-drag
scrolling is in the thumbnail bar... I was expecting it to be at least
jumpy, but it is very smooth. I wrote that under the assumption that
either scrolling the bar by mouse or by an automatic action wouldn't
make much difference --- but as you say, there are other priorities.

Perhaps it's just me, but I am very keyboard-driven. And I think that,
in general, having a good set of keyboard shortcuts is a very
important usability measure (Inkscape, for example, has a wonderfully
coherent and complete collection of shortcuts... but I digress).

I'd provide these keybindings:
- Mousewheel on image: changes to the next image.
- Mousewheel on thumbnail bar: slides the bar (without changing the image).
- Ctrl + Mousewheel on image: Zoom. This is a wel-known shortcut
elsewhere (Inkscape, Firefox, OpenOffice...) so it is best to remain
consistent.
- + (plus): Zoom in.
- - (minus): Zoom out.
- 1: 100% scale.
- 0: Best fit of the image in the window.
- ...?
- Perhaps keybindings to navigate through directories would be nice,
too... But this would need the interface to be changed to display
folders, and I don't think that is good.


I have also noticed another maor issue with the usability of
Ristretto: Drag and Drop. One should be able to:
- Drag and drop a folder or a group of images or a single image from
Thunar to Ristretto.
- Drag and drop an image from the tumbnail bar to somewhere in Thunar
(thus moving the image file).
- The same, but draggin from the visualization area for the image.
- Drag-and-drop to other applications too, like Inkscape or OpenOffice.

This would make Ristretto + Thunar a very powerful combination, with
the latter acting as a surrogate file browser.

addition: an (optional) properties dialog with xfconf!  By default it
compiles without xfconf, you have to run the configure script with the
flag --enable-configure-dialog.

The new dep will become required when Xfce 4.6 will be ready.

Yes - I wondered about implementing one a while back, but I don't use 
abiword.  What filetypes does abiword thumbnail?  Word Document and 
others?  I'll need them to know what mimetypes to set.

I should also ask now - are there any more formats I've missed out, that 
people would like to see thumbnails of?  XCF (Gimp) images are coming in 
the next release.  RealMedia files don't work yet, and won't until 
ffmpeg supports them (the code for that is in the ffmpeg cvs - there are 
still a number of issues with it though).

.abw files, among others. But current abiword makes for a bad thumbnailer.

It should work with the next release of abiword (2.6.4) due to be
released in the near future. I'll write a good thumbnailer then.

html2ps might be helpful here.

I'm also looking at perhaps using GraphicsMagick instead of ImageMagick,

I have two keyboard layouts (us,ru) in xorg.conf.
When I start xfce-session xkb-plugin shows "us" and "(null)". Also plugin don't
remember what layout use in each window and use "us".
If I remove xkb-plugin from panel and add it again then xkb-plugin works
properly.

Hi all,

	There is any plugin or panel applet that insert a launcher in
the panel selecting the application from the menu?

	In gnome when you want to add a new launcher you get a list of
application installed. I thinks these applications are the
menu applications.

	I xfce I can not found that. When I want to add a new launcher
I must to write the application command and search the icon by hand.

If there is not this panel plugin I can try to write it.

Sorry for the delay.  I was cleaning up my ~/qemu directory and crossed a file
that reminded me the kiosk issue.

As I can read, there is no real way to fix it (no hint at the horizon).  You
could provide a more useful strace log with: strace -eopen,stat64 xfce4-panel.

Hi all,

I am pleased to announce version xfce4-dict 0.4.0.

It has grown into a stand-alone application which can be used without
having the panel plugin loaded.
There is a new command: "xfce4-dict" which starts the program as a
stand-alone application if the panel plugin is not loaded and simply
raises the main window if the panel plugin is loaded.

The old xfce4-dict-popup was removed because it is no longer needed,
xfce4-dict accepts some command line options to fully replace its
functionality.

Additionally many minor usuability issues and bugs have been fixed in
this release.

Hey all

In the new Xubuntu hardy (8.04) with Xfce 4.4.2, the very useful 
'places' goodie has changed its behaviour since Xubuntu 7.10: my 
non-linux partitions on the hard drive are not shown any more, although 
they are in /etc/fstab and get properly mounted. This is of course a 
major drawback.

I have searched the web and the mailing lists but not found anything. So 
I hope this is the right place to find help, or report a bug if it is one.

It seems that the mount plugin doesn't handles UUID (see
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=480547). Maybe the same
thing happens to places?

So I should use device names instead of uuids? I thought this was not 
the safest way to organise my partitions.

though please don't open bug reports on debian -- they don't forward it
to bugzilla.xfce.org. It will be a minor change to only one function to
at least allow UID lines; though I will probably care for it tomorrow
when being sober after today's evening...

You DO know that Yves-Alexis Perez, aka Corsac, is one of the key
debian-pkg-xfce maintainers right?

Sure I do know that; though I often had the feeling that bugs weren't
forwarded neither to me directly nor to bugzilla.xfce; and anyway, it
doesn't make any sense to report it to Debian's bug system as it's
obviously a problem of the source code, _and_ additionally, he had
already been using the correct mailing list, so he apparently already
knew of the differences between Debian and the "Xfce Goodies Team". I
hope Yves-Alexis got it right -- I didn't want to offend anyone's work,
only give a hint on some possible enhancements :)

We are not much working on pkg-xfce currently, so bug triaging may be a
little bit late. If you know some bugs not yet triaged/forwarded, don't
hesitate to reply to the bug asking for news.

lv.png and Makefile.am should be located in flags directory.
Makefile.am is wrongly set as binary file, therefore diff doesn't show
included line for lv.

This version still has the "0%CPU bug". And as we said on IRC, maybe it'd be

Yep, confirming that the bug still exists... No CPU usage and RSS only for
one applications larger than 1 MB.

'Cpu' should also be written as 'CPU' ;)

I know that there is already a battery plugin for xfce, but i wrote a new
one using DBus and HAL to detect and scan about the battery status, the
plugin also supports suspend/hibernate and powersave, i was developing this
applet the last three months, and i would like to host it on the xfce
goodies website if it's possible.

if you are interested to my project please let me know so i can send you the
source.

don't you?

I think the attached patch "xfce4_taskmanager_cpufix.diff" resolves the
problem. If I didn't miss something else it was simply a wrong cast.
At least with this change it works for me.


There is another patch "xfce4_taskmanager_fixes.diff" which fixes the
following compiler warnings:

Hello,

I would like to submit this patch for xfce4-screenshoter-plugin.

It does the following changes :

- the behaviour is now : get a shot of full screen or of the focused
window depending on the option selected. This solve at least one bug,
with the old plugin when clicking on the desktop with the "Take
fullscreen..." option off, the picture was totally crazy.
- delay now works.
- saving files works correctly: the cancel button works as well as the
save one (based on initial work of Debian).
- the button is unclickable during the delay so that the user does not
take 2 shots at the same time.

Known bugs :

- as before, when opening a menu during a shot, the picture shows some
weird artefacts.

To be done :

- make PrintScreen take a shot of the whole desktop.
- make Alt + PrintScreen take a shot of the focused window.
- Fix the bug above :)
- Port conf to xfconf

This feels odd in that s/thumbnail/thumbnails would be better and there
should be either an article before slideshow or the plural should be
used, for example

This slideshow feature is really cool.  I haven't tried it, but could I 
set up an action whereby I select "n" images and see a slideshow of those?

The CPU temperature by default is in Black, but it does not change to white
using the dark theme.

Please check this.
lv.png and Makefile.am should be located in flags directory.
Makefile.am is wrongly set as binary file, therefore diff doesn't show
included line for lv.

I'm the maintainer of the XKB plugin, and as such I probably
should check in you patch (thanks for it!), but unfortunately
I don't know when exactly I'll be able to do this.

So, if anyone else with commit rights wishes to do it - go ahead.
Otherwise, I'll have to find some time to do it these days.

Yves, no i didn't know there is a svn version for a battery plugin done
using Dbus and HAL, that's why i wrote one wish uses these functionalities
and support suspend/hibernate ( also i use libnotify if found on the
system), anyway i would like to contribute if needed, at least for
translation, i'm a frensh,spanish,arabic speaker.

the weather plugin seems to cache network configuration. I've start the plugin
on a network 192.168.0.0/24 with a DNS server 192.168.0.1. After suspending the
machine and waking up on a network 192.168.1.0./24 with a DNS server
192.168.1.1 the plugin still tries to reach the nameserver 192.168.0.1. A
restart of the plugin fixes it. so the network configuration is okay.

I found out about by tracing the process with strace.

Used xfce-weather-plugin 0.6.2-1 (Debian lenny)




Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. start the plugin in network A, with local nameserver
2. suspend machine
3. wake up in another network B (different nameserver)


Actual Results:  
plugin does not reach the server for retrieving weather informationen

Expected Results:  
see information about the weather

FYI, the solution to this is to refresh nameserver info, which is cached by the
libc. Doing this is quite easy:


#include <netinet/in.h>
#include <arpa/nameser.h>
#include <resolv.h>

update_network_stuff() 
{
...
    res_init();
    do_network_stuff();
...
}

Candidate patch

This patch adds a call to res_init() when needed (resolv.conf changed). It also
modifies configure.in.in to link against libresolv. It should fix this bug :)
