With cirrus driver on kvm and qemu, X crashes. /var/log/messages says: gdm-binary[1916]: WARNING: gdm_slave_xioerror_handler: Critical X-Error - :0 restart vesa driver doesn't crash, but makes terminal look "funky". But only with qemu/kvm/virtualbox afaik. Seems to work on real boxes. This is done in Gnome/KDE but it is mainly for legacy (at a time this was better to always set it). Using oo-gtk is a better solution for this problem.
