Hi,
I saw that there are two statistics pages:
http://i18n.xfce.org/stats/index.php?mode=4&lang=trunk/gl and
http://mocha.foo-projects.org/~stephan/stats.php?lang=gl&branch=xfce%2Ftrunk
. The first doesn't show all the goodies files, but it has the totals.
The second is outdated and does not show the totals, but it has a
better layout of the information. What is the canonical one?

The first one is the canonical one, the second one is under
development. (And, afaik... it is not out-dated since I still get
spammed by the cron-daemon twice a day)

That's the date of the last SVN checkin (since the stats were updated), 
not the last time the stats were updated.

Hi everyone,
following Og's advice I am giving notice that we are going to make a
small bugfix release of xfburn. The fix is very small, and already
done, but I want to use the opportunity to give anyone interested in
translating xfburn a day or two to update the po files. If you are
working on a translation, please shoot me a short notice so that I can
estimate how long I should wait before a new release.

P.S. I try to keep the German translation up-to-date, but I since I
never use any Linux programs in German, I would not mind someone
having a second look over it and correcting my likely bad sounding
translations ;-)

I'll probably give it a look during the weekend.
In general, allowing a week or so for the translations would be OK.
It will also give me a chance to have the translation reviewed.

Yes, I'll be better next time. For this release I was in a rush trying
to catch debian lenny, and the full freeze is coming up around the 15.
So maybe I can wait until after the weekend, and we might still have a
chance to catch it. Since Corsac has already gotten 0.3.1 in there
anyways, I might be willing to take the risk :-).

There is one not-localizable string, which cannot be found in .po file, but
it should be localizable. It is the string "Welcome to xfburn!", it comes
from the file xfburn-welcome-tab.c. Please see more details in this picture:

Could you please fix my address on the last line above while you're at
it? It's pp1.inet.fi instead of pp2.inet.fi. Note the number. This is
kinda important because I happen to know that the other address is in
use by another Jari Rahkonen. Damn name thief... :/

F?bio Nogueira and I have been consistently working on the
translations for the Brazilian team for the last 12 months++ (we also
work together on the translation for the GNOME and KDE projects).  Our
workflow has been: he works on translations and submits to me for
review, which I then commit. He has shown a lot of enthusiasm and has
tremendously improved his skills of translation as well as VCS
knowledge.

With that in mind, I'd kidly request svn commit access to both XFCE
and Goodies repositories for F?bio Nogueira so that we can keep on
rocking.

I'd say, let's all switch to using unique names ;-).

As far as I can remember, Attila's name had some mispelling in this file. I
do not have permissions for changing anything else than po directories, can
someone fix this as well, please?

Hi everyone,
I wanted to say thanks for all the translation updates! It's nice to
see the program localized to so many languages.

Originally I wanted to make a release today, but we just had a patch
that makes an additional couple of strings translatable (the blank
modes). Since you all put so much effort into these translations, I'm
going to wait until tomorrow (Tuesday) to make the release. I know
it's not much time, but it's only 6 strings, and I don't think it'll
look too bad if they don't get translated. That should give everyone
at least a chance to complete the translation, and give the new
release possibly a chance to get into Debian still (there's some
bugfixes I would really like to push out).

First off, thanks David for the heads up! :)

As far as the new strings, I have a couple of suggestions based on my
interpretation of what the new strings really mean. Going with the
assumption that they represent the choices given to the user for what
exactly they want to do, the strings should be changed to say "Quick
Format" and not "Format Fast". The same approach should be used for
the other strings.

Also, what is deformat? I could assume that it would be the opposite
of format, but... I'm not sure that word exists...

I've attached a patch with my suggestions here. I look forward to your reply.

fixed some typing mistakes, and fixed some style errors.

My apologies, but I will have to send the translation file again. I was
comparing an old version of xfburn from Ubuntu repositories and the version
that I compiled, and I discovered that I had translated "Human readable
filesizes" as "Human readable filenames". Fixed now. Now this is the version
I stick with until there are more strings added.

FYI, since you have a translator account, you can add the missing pot
files yourself. Simply run make update-po in the po directly then svn
add project_name.po and commit.

Well, I tried, it gave me many errors and asked to install packages. It just
doesn't work. last errors: http://pastebin.ca/1073363

Anyway, all pot files are there now so it isn't a problem if I cannot run
it.

I see, you don't have an environment ready to build Xfce from sources.
In this case, I agree asking on the ML is the easiest way to go.

Looks like there were still some mistakes in the translation. So, I had to
make some updates to the Estonian language file. I changed the word "blank"
from a noun to a verb in several places where needed, and did some
additional corrections. I have never created a patch file before, so I hope
that it works.

The patch worked fine, thanks!
Just a side note, if it's just one file you don't necessarily need to
use tar. You can just use "bzip2 et.patch".

Hi,
we had a small discussion about translating console messages that I
would like to get some feedback from a broader range of people.

We had the request to have messages and warnings (not debug output) to
the console translated. From my point of view as the programmer, this
is not a big issue and if it would help someone, then it's easy to
make the strings translatable.

But on the other hand, I would not want to place too much of a burden
on the translators, who I'm sure are already busy translating all the
GUI strings. In comparison to the amount of GUI strings, I would not
expect translating the console messages to add too many new strings,
but nonetheless it would be more work.

So in short form I would appreciate some feedback:
1. Would non-native speakers appreciate translated console messages
for GUI programs?
2. Would the translators be willing to do the extra work?

The first thing to wonder is whether as a developer you're ready to
receive bug reports including warning and error messages that are not in
english from people who won't probably know how to change the default
language. It will actually put the burden on you, the developer, when
you'll try to figure out of which warning or error messages they are the
translations.

They probably would appreciate it but will it add something to their use
of your app (are we talking xfburn only here?)? On the other hand, will
they send those messages to the list or to you when something goes
wrong?

A lot of them yes. Others don't care.

Marking them translatable will enable those that want to translate them to do so.
The rest who don't care or do not have enough time and prefer to focus on the GUI 
will leave them untranslated.
Thus, I don't see why you should leave them untranslatable. You'll only continue to 
recieve requests to mark then translatable ;^)

I have stopped marking them as translatable. If you think the
warning/error/message is important, you should use a dialog (or what
so ever) anyway. You can't rely on console messages if
the user uses a gui. (Only strings like --version and option entries
should be translatable, since the users specifically asks about them
in a console)

Some warnings are also hard to translate, which leads to more
confusion for both the user and the developer when receiving the bug
report (like Jean-Fran?ois already said),

they can't. The string might even be used multiple times (in both
console and gui). The only thing is, if you use error messages from
(for exaple) glib, then they are translated. So it could result in a
half translated message.

Exactly.
IMO a GUI app should work on the GUI and not on the console. Any expect
warnings or error messages should be presented to the user using
dialogue boxes, statusbar messages or whatever as Nick said.
Console messages in GUI apps are nice but should be optional for the
user to be able to fully interact with the user but they are helpful
for developers and people who are willing to help development in
whatever way and those should be able to read and understand console
messages also in English.

Yes, I'd be afraid to get any console messages in Hindi, Chinese or
Japanese (these languages look totally weird for me personally as I
don't know them :D) in bug reports. It would just cause more
conversation as I first have to ask the reporter to provide me English
error messages which I can't actually read and maybe I even need to
explain the reporter how to change the locale to get English messages.

My suggestion as Developer:
Don't make console messages translatable to keep things easy when
getting feedback from users and to help understanding first time
reports, without the need of another three mails to know what the
report is about.

My suggestion as Translator:
Don't make console messages translatable to not increase the amount of
translatable strings too much unnecessarily. When translating an app,
it's nice to get it finished at some point :D. If there are tons of
technical warnings or error messages which need to be translated, it
might get frustrating quickly and maybe this causes in loosing interest
in continuing the translation.
Additionally, translators need to fully understand the console messages
which obviously will contain fairly many technically terms. If they
translate them wrong, users might be even more confused by getting
wrong or partly wrong messages about the application's behaviour.
Well, this can happen for strings in the GUI too but probably it's less
dangerous as in a GUI strings are less important because of the context
in which they are found, IMO.

Sure they can! There are various ways for commenting messages, at least one
created for specifically this purpose - separating the comment and string
with |, for example Tooltip|Create CD.
Now this leads this to something I wanted to say earlier. I think if a
string appears in multiple locations, they should be separate entries, even
if they are the same in English. In some languages, the forms of names in
tooltips and toolbar buttons may (and does) differ, for example.

IMHO, strings like Tooltip|Create CD lead the translators to
confusion. Please use msgctxt for the context.

About the discussed issue: translate that messages is good to help the
users understand the problem, but if they try to search in the
internet they didn't find nothing if they search with translated
messages unless the official documentation also use the translated
messages. You could include a numeric code in the messages to bypass
that problem. Also the translators could translate the strings in an
incorrect way, but this could happen with all the other translations.

My suggestion is to make them translatables and make sure that the
official docs have a refference to the translated messages, and the
messages could include a numeric code to help.

Agreed. Except that for some situations the English (GUI) text is the
same, but the translated texts may be different; In that case the only
way is to use the prefix method.

Console messages should be regarded as non-user visible.  They are
like debug messages that a developer may request as a response to a
bug report.  Your alternative to use numeric code is interesting, but
I don't think it is really worth the effort.

No. Not in Romania. Most of the users start their programs from a GUI
interface, so they don't see the console messages anyway. People that
use a terminal to start a GUI program are highly unlikely to use the
localized interface here in Romania. English is very popular here and
power users think that it's odd and unproductive to use a localized
interface.
